The history of perfume goes back to ancient  Mesopotamia & Egypt, and  refined by  the Persians and Romans. Although archaeologist have uncovered what is believed to be the oldest perfume in the world, around 4,000 years in Cyprus. Perfume  also existed in India as mentioned in the Hindu Ayurvedic text  written in the 7th century.

In the early days of perfume making in western Europe 1221, by the monks  and in the east, the Hungarians produced a perfume made of scented oils, this was known as Hungary Water.The demand was high and in Renaissance Italy refinements were taken further. From here the Italian method of refinement was taken to France,  from which France quickly became a centre for perfume  manufacture. Perfume was used by the rich primarily  to mask body ordors  through the lack of bathing. Due to the patronage of the wealthy the perfume industry was created.

Perfumes were exclusively made with natural aromatic raw materials obtained from botanical and animal sources. Due to the cost of obtaining these ingredience and the cost of production.
The combination of this two factors meant only the wealthy could afford the finished perfumes.

The gradual transformation of classic perfume into its present day version started in the 19th century as a result of technological advancement.This is made possible because modern perfumes are mostly composed with the less expensive man-made aromatic compounds and substances known as aroma chemicals.Aromas chemical are made to mimic and replace some of the most expensive botanical oils and animal derived raw materials. They are also used to produce other beautiful odors that do not occur in nature, thereby extending the repertoire of pleasant odors that perfumers can use.
